On a rainy evening, my hop stop was at Asthika Samajam on Saturday, 6th December 2013. Sruthilaya Trust founded by Guru Shri. Karaikudi Mani conducts the music festival every year and the artist for the evening was Shri. TM Krishna.
TM Krishna is known for his mellifluous rendering that creates the perfect mood. In spite of heavy rains, the hall was crowded perhaps to be drenched on Kannada Gowlai. It was one of the perfect concert as it had krithis of Trinity.Krishna began his concert with a small sketch of Anandha Bhairavi to sing "Pahi Sri Giri raja suthe" a krithi by Shyama Sastri set to rupaka talam. The next song was in Kasiramakriya (according to Dikshidhar nomenclature) with the famous "Ramanatham Bhajeham" after a short sketch in thisra ekam. The swaras at the charanam line, "Sethumadhya gandham" added beauty to ragam. "Hecharigaka ra ra" followed suit in Yadhukula Khambhoji. The big piece for the evening was Kannada Gowlai - "Orajupu chu".
Krishna elaborated the beauty of the raga and moved to Thyagaraja's master piece "Orajupuchu". His next master piece was the RTP. Saveri was deliniated in chaste style and he brought out the essence of the raga through Thanam that was followed by Pallavi "Kari mora veena letha Hare Krishna" (long time since one listened to). His raga sancharas and swaras for the Pallavi in Sahana, Kaanadaa, Kapi and Devagandhari were full of musical sentiments and emotions!.
Among the pieces in the subsequent sessions were the javalis "Modi jesa veLara" in Khamas composed by Thiruppanandhal Pattabirama Iyer and this was followed by "Adhi nee pai Marulu" in Yamuna Kalyani, a javali by Dharmapuri Subbaraya Iyer.
He was accompanied on the violin by HN Bhaskar and Neyveli Narayanan on the Mridangam. The violinist imparted deft touches and played beautiful shades of Kannada gowla and Saveri. Neyveli Narayanan's support on the laya part was neat though short.
Overall, it was an interesting concert from Krishna.
